Toumaz Technology and The Park Club Fitness Centre Trial Sensium LifePebble

Toumaz Technology and Milton Park-based The Park Club fitness centre have completed a one-day trial of Toumaz’s revolutionary wireless vital signs monitor, the Sensium™ LifePebble.

The two companies teamed up to test the physical fitness levels of a group of 12 participants, comparing the performance of the ultra-small size – and wireless – Sensium LifePebble against some of the standard analysis equipment in use today. The trial was conducted by renowned personal training expert and former international athlete Giuseppe Minetti. The results will be collated and analysed over the next few weeks.

The Sensium LifePebble is a very small body-worn module that can continuously and intelligently monitor multiple vital signs from an individual, including ECG, heart rate, physical activity and skin temperature. The LifePebble can wirelessly transmit this data to a PC, PDA or smart phone for further analysis by healthcare and sports training professionals. Today, “gold standard” fitness analysis and testing devices are essentially “fixed equipment”. The ground-breaking LifePebble will deliver medical quality physiological data but in a low-cost, non-intrusive and portable package, potentially making professional-grade fitness monitoring available to an individual for use in a far wider range of training environments, both inside and outside the gym.

The specific focus of the trial is to explore the capability of the LifePebble to measure VO2 (maximal oxygen uptake) and anaerobic threshold – two key parameters used to assess the training intensity required to produce beneficial effects on endurance and cardiovascular fitness.
